What is this gearbox pipe connection please?

Post by RichardF »

I just dropped the engine/gearbox to make extensive repairs, but as I lowered them to the ground I saw a plastic/nylon pipe is still connected to the very back of the gearbox extension.
It goes up into the engine bay, and then disappears through a hole going forward, together with another similar pipe.
I can take a picture of it tomorrow. It is the only connection there, and the nipple the pipe connects to is held to the box by a banjo union with (I think) a 13 mm head screw.
Can anyone, please, tell me what this is???

Thanks for the suggestion. I hope there isn't another slave cylinder inside the gearbox for some reason, but it does look similar to the clutch pipes, although it doesn't go to the clutch slave cylinder.

I'll investigate further tomorrow, and take a picture.

Maybe I'll disconnect it and see what fluid runs out.

There is nothing I can find in the Bentley manual.

it's the breather vent pipe, 14mm hex banjo fitting, vents on top of the fuel tank, just disconnect at the banjo before removing the gearbox, note there should be a copper washer either side of the banjo fitting, one may stick to the case, the other one is easily lost : )

Thanks Aidan, you're a prince!

I thought it might be some obscure anti-pollution breather.

I'll watch out for the washers, and anneal them before refitting.

Not "anti-pollution" as such, it stops the transmission ingesting water when wading. All gearboxes and diffs have to have a breather because they get quite warm in operation and would otherwise slowly push the oil out with every operating temperature cycle.

Thank you. I'd better also check the breather pipe on the front diff.
