Exploding CV joints - possible cause anyone?

Post by Gary. »

I've now just replaced the CV joints on rear offside after complete failure for the second time! The first time, just the wheel side collapsed after about 100 miles. Now both sides after about 1000? I used the cheaper 'alternative' brand, which I think is the primary reason for failure. I had to send one back as it was assembled differently than the others!

Other than the CV's being crap, is there a possible alternative reason for failure? Rear diff works, though diff lock is currently stuck in off position, so can't imagine what else could be causing the problem.

Thanks
Gary

Exploding how? popping out or damaged metal?

Just thinking out loud as I have no idea, but what is the wear on the tyre like? Is it running true/trailing arm true etc?
Is there more drive going to that side for some reason ?

Strange, I fitted a cheapo to the rear outer on my panel van years ago with no problems, and it gets lots of stick offroad!

Is the diff lock definitely disengaged, or just the light that says so? Jacked up one rear corner and you can still turn the other rear wheel easily?

Oh yes, definatley. It was my first thought.

They completely came apart and twsited the hell out of the rubber boots.

I've just fitted the proper OEM ones, they were much tighter on the shaft and to move. I guess we will see in time.

Pics would help a lot. Did the spider in the middle fail? Stripped splines? Circlip pop off and the shaft walked out?
I've only ever seen one cv fail "in the field" and that was on Neil's doka.

They just came apart, centre piece still on spline, no broken componenents.

Has your truck got a big lift? Wrong driveshafts? IIRC early 2wd are shorter (but will fit a 14") or am I wrong about that?

It's totally stock as far as I'm aware. No problem with the nearside CV's. It only done 55k and I have a full ownership history, so very unlikely it's been messed about with. I'm confident I removed the original CV joints as the bolts were a bugger to get out!

Aircooled shafts are longer by 7mm

MattFlint once had a new cheap CV joint fail inside 9 miles, one of those really cheap Brazilian ones with a paper gasket, so definitely worth buying decent quality, though none of them are as good as the original GKN production were back in the 80s imho

Ok so I was wrong about that, thanks for the correction. Does that mean they would help the cv's to work properly on a lifted syncro?

Without visual i formation its hard to diagnose what may have been out of spec/wrongly assembled/faulty.
