Aidan wrote:interestingly the drawings for the TDi starter to diesel bellhousing adapter are readily available online, hence brickie sells them, but there's a version of the adapter for wbx sold in the states http://www.westyventures.com/parts.html - I don't know if the SA one is any different
And look how close it is to the DLA bracket!

I'd still go with modding the fuel tank, it gives you room to work when the starter needs to be removed.

I would say that swapping the short mounting stud in the bellhousing for a bolt improves access considerably.

You drill the mounting holes slightly bigger then slide the 2 sleeves into position. This gives you the correct bolt spacing. Very easy to do. Then fit adapter to front of starter and fit. I had this setup for a few years on a tdi with no issues then only changed it all to fit the dual mass setup.
I have one in a box in the workshop.

That's ok for the likes of you and me, but for some people it would be a big hurdle.

Back to back comparison of Denso/WOSP vs VAG "TDI" starter.

Yes the Denso is taller and longer overall, but gives more clearance over the DLA and switch.

The TDI (Golf 4) has a larger diameter 10 tooth pinion.
The wbx has 9 teeth.

Didnt know that. My one came off the 2.0 Gti but was paint marked "Toledo Tdi" as you can see. Might be wrong though, there's a lot of side play in the pinion shaft...
WOSP used to be about £250 and I bought mine s/h for a lot less.

I may be wrong about 9 tooth tdi, maybe the pitch means the 10 tooth will work with wbx flywheel when correctly placed

I believe the TDi starter works with the JX flywheel if you use the adapter, but I don't know the tooth count and diameter of the diesel il4 flywheel compared to the wbx

WOSP quote LMS 280 1.4 L/N for the Transporter 2.1, which I guess is the WBX, yet in the spec it also says clockwise, however we need and anticlockwise starter surely, and it's £311 - £330 depending on source

https://www.ccw-tools.com/WOSP-LMS280-- ... 35385.aspx

they don't appear to do one for Seat TDi, so I wonder what model yours is ?

LMS 280 1.4 is the (silver) one I have got and its started a wbx so defo correct rotation.

"TDI" starters appear to have 9,10 or 11 tooth pinions, the (black) one I have from the mk4 Gti 2.0 is as shown in my pics.

Bosch 0 001 121 008 ?

Westy Ventures state that the SR0425X or SR425N (1.1KW) will fit without DLA bracket mods (important for me as I have the early short bracket)
Appears to have 10 tooth pinion?

The 2.0 kw version requires the long bracket AND mods.
