WOSP starter on a petrol syncro?

Post by silverbullet »

Anybody successfully fitted one before?
While the engine is being built I thought that I'd upgrade the starter. Fiddled the old one out (gearbox fitted and near enough at correct height) but the WOSP looks very very tight because it is longer (smaller motor on top where the solenoid would be) It might even need a bit of hot air gun applied to the tank to get clearance...

Made it fit. Pics tell all, hot air gun set to high (800°C) and shove the greased former up (100mm fence post offcut, sanded a 10mm+ radius on the edges) with a prop off the rear valance so it didnt spit it out, then let it set again.
All done in minutes.
Its necessary to remove the DLA and switch, then its a slight fiddle to fit.
I think that I'll remake the adaptor plate, a few degrees rotation would improve clearance off the tank.ImageImageImageImage

PS its not actually a big "stretch" to the tank to get the extra clearance for the WOSP starter, the arch in the tank is nominally long enough but needs the forward end squaring up.

Apparently my dobber wasnt wide enough and I needed to shove it in further!

With the crankcase bolted up I now have 5mm clearance at the tightest point.
I may have another go at it later but I need a break from this sort of grovelling, there's too much of me in too small a space!Image

In SA you can buy a golf TDI starter that has an adapter fitted to it for the 2.1. They work very well and are smaller than that one. Adapter is removable and can be transferred to another starter when needed.

JCC's big window syncro has one iirc, it was the first that I had seen on a wbx.

Thing is, these Denso starters are readily available in UK and I can always fit a standard wbx one in an emergency.

This mod has only cost about 0.5litre of tank capacity (and I have a spare tank!)

It does, it's the only sa modification I kept to be honest. It wasnt all good tho.
Who ever fitted it added an un unnecessary relay self tappered through the fire wall which I removed and put back to standard wiring. Afterwards the tank leaked when filled to the top as the screw for the relay punctured the tank as simon discovered.

I could do with the work! Does the pinion have the same number of teeth or is the new starter repositioned to correct the gear meshing?

interestingly the drawings for the TDi starter to diesel bellhousing adapter are readily available online, hence brickie sells them, but there's a version of the adapter for wbx sold in the states http://www.westyventures.com/parts.html - I don't know if the SA one is any different

John sent me the pics of his one. The holes in the starter had been "pulled" and reducing bushes fitted to correct the pitch.

So that example isn't actually a straight bolt-on swap, its still a modified starter.
