On the jx the fan was for cooling the turbo on shutdown, can't help with the snorkel, mine's a doka.

Think it was just synco that had the fan for the turbo. My van never hasn't got one (2wd)

They never worked, I took mine off and just let it tick over for 5 min before switching off. Have you checked ETKA re. snorkel bits?

I've only ever had the fan run once after a very hot climb in Wales. I have a doka, so not sure of the position similarities? Just stuck my head in the oily engine bay and took these. This is unmolested stock 1.6jx.

To be honest, it's position does not seem that well thought out!

I have just removed the fan with the ducting and have it on the bench. If you need a spare it's for sale.

Inlet on a doka goes to the front of the 'box' with the engine intake hose and draws air through the side air vent, I guess on a van it draws air from the d pillar. Outlet is connected to a metal tube fitted under the manifold by a hose. In conjunction with the fan is a small electric pump to circulate coolant on shutdown to prevent damage to the head. I can't add photos as i don't have an i-phone

it attaches to a hose which goes to the manifold cooling plate, on a syncro there is a metal fitting on top of the exhaust (I think) manifold so the blower blows cool air onto the manifold and turbo to reduce differential cooling, when it gets to hot and as the engine cools down, together with the aux water pump continuining to run after engine stop it helps to keep the cast iron bits and the alloy head from cooling at different rates stressing the studs and head gasket
there's a nos one for sale on ebay and has the diagram showing the parts https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Genuine-VW-A ... 3620597122
I think Glen's is one of the few TD Syncro I have come across where it was all present and working properly, you'd be out laning and we'd stop as a group and those who didn't know about it would always wonder why there was noise coming from his engine bay
