Power steering intermittent stiffness

Post by Gary. »

Hi All,

I have a problem with my power steering being intermittently extreemly stiff. I've done a good search for help, but I cannot find any threads or wiki referring to power steering problems. I guess only a few variants of the T25 had power steering?

It was fine a few days back, but yesterday the steering was so stiff I thought something was broken! Almost like the power steering was working against me.

The pump was re-built with brickwerks seal kit not that long ago, no obvious oil leaks, noises & oil level seems OK.

Are there any basic maintainence tips which I can run through?

Thanks in advance.
Gary.

usually a sign that the universal joint is failing, that's the joint between the rack and the rod to the relay, part number 281 422 417, they can be refurbished by someone like GKN but I think now they are available new again that's the better option

Notchy UJ. Do not drive it! The needles in the bearings will be breaking up, had this on a car once and it had unassisted steering, bloody dangerous.

Yeah just done this job 2 days ago. Unbelievable how badly it was worn. I also changed them 2 rubber bushes one at the bottom of the rack and and theres also another at the very front of the van near the washer bottle.

Wow, thanks for the advice guys. It's almost like you have nothing better to do at the moment!

I've parked over the pit and will take a look tomorrow. Is it an easy job?

Can anyone give me a step-by step? I'm really struggling to remove it. I've removed the 13mm nut/bolts from UJ and disconnected the rod from steering colulmn, but I just can't get enough movement to remove it. It's doing my head in!

Remove the shaft with the UJ still attached, depending on which spline lets go first.
The UJ will probably need some "encouragement" with a pry bar in its splits to help it to release from the splines.

PS you should be able to get a pry bar through the forks of the UJ and push against the pinion shaft of the rack.
You may have to pry, then spray with penetrating oil, then knock it back on, then prise again.
Repeat until pissed off and it should release.

PPS be careful of the black plastic shroud that covers the pinion shaft seal

Thanks, but there is not enough space at the end of the shaft to pull it to the side and slide out (it hit's the chassis). Could be a RHD issue?

Just done mine (rhd) I dropped the skid plate, the shaft pushes inwards against the rad hoses.I took out the bolt on the bevel box clamp and moved it towards the box, gives you a smidge more room.

Just managed to get it off. Thanks for advice chaps, especially that of to leave the UJ attached to the shaft.

I managed to pull the shaft out at the top end using a small ratchet strap around the chassis, just gave me that 5mm I needed to tap it off. Very tight, but eventually it moved after multiple tapping with long bar.

The UJ is almost unmovable on one axis, so I hope it was the culprit!

I like to follow up posts with a conclusion.

Basically it's fixed! :D Thank's Aidan - it was the UJ. :ok Oh and thanks Brickwerks for being so quick to swap out a reconditioned unit.

Re-assembling advice:

I left the bolts slack on the UJ clamps until the front end was all bolted up tight. This gave me some flexibility on length as the splined shaft has plenty of length. Of course when I drove off in in a straight line the steering wheel was 'on the wonk'! Easy fix but removing steering wheel and resetting on spline.

I didn't end up changing the plastic/rubber bit as it looked OK. Plus it was rivitted or something and could not be arsed to remove it.
