Well not had much time to do anything with the van lately due to work and a long list of DIY jobs....but on the way to the FB 4x4 weekend in Wales at the end of May I stopped off at Ultimate Engineering in Bristol and had the rear brakes swapped to discs, Tim did an excellent job

I finally got around to starting the work on the trailing arms yesterday. They are the original arms and the bushes look knackered so I figured its time for some new bushes.
A couple of years ago I bought a job lot of bits from a guy who had sold his van and this included a new pair of trailing arms, the kit from Bricky with bushes fitted so I figured I may as well fit these. Nothing wrong with mine, they are nice and solid, so once finished Ill pop them up for sale

Image

The inner TA bolt was not too difficult and amazingly I was able to undo the outer nut too, the bolt is a bit seized so I soaked it in Plus-gas and hopefully it will pop out. I left it overnight, the inner bolt came out fine but the outer needed cutting as the bolt had rusted to the metal tube inside the rubber bush, first arm off

Image

You can see where the arms have been rubbing to the right for a while, thankfully nothing too bad, ready for a quick clean up before refitting

Image

Today the second came off easier than the first as I just cut the outer bolt  All mounts treated, cleaned and painted ready to re-fit the arms. I think I'll tackle the drive shafts while they are out, looking at my CV boots the outer are original VW with some cracking but not much. bricky are currently out of stock of the thermoplastic boots but I have a couple so I can at least get one shaft done.

Well by 10:30 today I had both arms refitted and was going great guns.....and then came the feckin drive shafts....

Image

So I really didn't want to do the shafts, mainly because I've not done it before and it looks tricky but in the end they were on the bench and I'd be crazy not to and I'd be doing the old girl a disservice not to try. Also I noticed the outer boots were originals so I was guessing they have not been changed in a long while....
I had a pair of thermoplastic boots on the shelf from bricky but unfortunately they are currently out of stock so I decided to clean up the genuine boots as there in great condition (they don't make rubber like they used to), thus allowing me to rebuild both shafts. The VW pair will be fitted at the gearbox end and the new thermoplastic ones at the trailing arm end.

Image

The first shaft had been whacked but I got everything off, the second shaft had also been whacked  and I just can't release it. Luckily I have 2 from a westy I broke a few years ago. So today I removed and cleaned up 7 CV boots, for anyone who has done this you know what its like :? ......anyway it was the right thing to so because the grease in the outers was very pasty. So the first shaft finished today, second to do tomorrow....

I have phased the right & left side as per this interesting video....https://youtu.be/unBUhRf8MB0.

Massive thanks to Weem Machine for answering all my 'MANY' questions, top man :ok

The key is using a brass drift on the end of the shaft if you want to ‘persuade’ it to come out, rather than hitting it directly with a hammer. That stops the end of the drive shaft mushrooming and prevents the kind of grief you’ve had.

Those shafts look like someone used a cheap puller to get the joints off in the past
And they didnt use the protection spacer before they wound them off
