Dads 2WD tintop to Syncro camper plus EJ25 - Project RustyD

Post by mrmule »

Hi all - been a while since I've had anything to contribute since the Doka went last year. I've been collecting, repairing, sourcing, and modifying bits to turns Dads new bought 1984 2WD twin slider to syncro camper. Anyway the practical works begins shortly, as I just got it out the garage in London down to Kent. Old 1.9WB is already out ready for Subaru power mated up to a fully rebuilt Aidan box.

Hopefully we'll go from this:

...to this:

So I hope I'll be able to glean a few pointers from y'all given that my distinct disadvantage is that I don't have a syncro here to look and measure against etc.

My first request if its accessible for someone is to map out the gearbox mount holes (three on each of the two mounts) on the cross member and post up. Thanks in advance!

Here's the kit as delivered by Jason:

Hey there,
are you in Walderslade, as in Medway?
Im only in Gillingham and currently own 2 pretty shoddy syncros...
If you ever need to measure anything or want any photos of anything just give us a shout. One is stored in Rainham and is pretty much stock. The other is in Gillingham and has been bodged by some crazy Latvians in the past.
cheers
Ben

Sorry i wasnt around more...
Bad timing im afraid. I got to a point where i was going to set light to my beetle if it didnt start! stupid air cooled vw's! We had fixed everything for the MOT, took it for a test drive, and WHAM the fecker stopped running. Fingers crossed it will be something simple, at the moment it looks like a fuel blockage combined with a rubbish needle valve in the carb.
Anyway...
I hope to have the turbo oil feed made up and replaced by the end of this weekend in my other syncro so let me know if you want me to drive up at any point.
cheers

I'll be watching with interest as just about to start my own conversion using a rusty donor vehicle for the parts, look forwards to more updates :)

Torsen - rusty is right. Everything had to get completely stripped down and went off for blasting and galvanising. Every bush, seal and gasket is getting renewed which wasn't really a matter of choice when you saw the old ones. I'll let you know the resources I've found as guides to the conversion if you want.

I'm using 1.14 for 3rd and 0.75 for 4th. If you mean sump, I'm just chopping down the sump by a couple of inches, and using RJs exhaust bracket like on my 2WD below. I added an oil cooler via sandwich plate to increase oil capacity:
