Oh, few people asked if any of this was on Facebook as it's a bit easier to follow, not something I'd thought about but why not.
Here on Facebook if you find it easier.

Starting to look like a van again.
:D

Noticed a peculiarity today.
The front wiring loom has outputs for spot lamps a'la rectangular headlamp loom. Van is a 87 model year so not like it's a late van with a fully loaded loom as we often see. Okay, so I know what you're thinking, it must have come originally with rectangular headlamps but it can't have done as it has the correct tabs for the grille.
I'm pretty sure when I first saw this van it was sporting a Taifun twin front grille and it also has some corresponding holes in the front crossmember.
The M codes don't give any clues.
The headlamp washer relay was also missing.
Most reasonable explanation I can think that it was specced with the twin headlamp loom and the Taifun grille fitted before delivery, the relay removed to stop it squirting water everywhere.

AFAIK the Taifun grill was a dealer addon, so not registered in M codes. And they easily could ordered/installed some new loom too (or somebody later).

Yeah, this is Britain though, I can't see someone going to the expense of changing a loom!
If it's anything like any of the places I've worked then the quickest cheapest option to get them working!
Maybe you're correct though as the van is a little unusual as it's basically a panel van Caravelle, electric mirrors, PAS, heated rear screen, rear wash wipe, central locking, metallic paint, unusual alloys.... Seems whoever ordered it wasn't shy with the options.

Or just somebody crimped the two pigtails to the existing loom with new spades. :ok

"Another thing I’ve never been happy with was how VW solved the problem of getting power to the number plate lamps, if you’ve not paid much attention it involves an excess of unprotected wire that’s badly routed and results in the wires dangling about when you open the rear flap."

Haha.. spot on.. Dokas arecl even worse.. or is it just mine @!@

Links of Buxton vw/audi garage that I worked at 1988, registered a black panel van with 2.1, gl spec mirrors, power steering , velour front seats, tinted glass and opening quarter lights, and auto transmission, it was specced by a funeral director. Probably now sat at the back of a funeral parlour gathering dust!

That would make a good buy for someone. Hearses tend to be well maintained and low mileage.
I've driven a fair few miles in a granada based one a mate had, folk would stop and let you out on roundabouts and do a double take when they realised ther was a dog lying on the coffin deck.
Some scowled and shook their heads, others grinned and gave a thumbs up.

Silly busy for this time of year, not complaining but we usually find bits of time here and there to do things but just too much to do!
So, wanting to keep the ball rolling we did a little job today.

Another little job ticked off

Image

The sliding door on the right hand side was devoid of the bracket to hold the CDL actuator, some brackets for this very job just landed so the sum total of todays work was drilling 4 holes on riveting it in place.
Little steps, little steps...

Just noticed the walk through bulk head. Haven't seen one before - mine used to have them before my ownership. Quite like them, wouldn't mind if the one behind the drivers seat was still in position
