Fuel pump

Post by Ray »

It seems that my fuel pump is not working. Wont start and no initial noise from pump on ignition switch on. I still have to check relays etc and lpg wiring. Are JP pumps any good as bosch are £95 or more. Never had any starting problems before even after the van standing for long periods between use.

Evening Ray,
I would be learning towards a dirty corroded connection before dismissing the pump.
it should still start on lpg tho , unless yours was set up to always start on petrol first before switching over ?

JP stuff is all far east made, its a fact of life. All Bosch are generic design regardless of application or vehicle brand, they all pump the same so just find the best price.

Yes, mine was set up to start on petrol and then switch to lpg. In fact last week it did start I think on lpg because I let it turn over for so long. The pump is in such difficult place to change especially for an old geezer, still it will get done!

I would check there's power going to the pump first. This can be done starting at the pump, then if no good the two pin connector at the bulkhead, and finally at the relay in the box above the coil. Also check any fuel pump/injector switch off relay used by the LPG system.

Tried all the ways suggested, wasn't electric supply or pump. Got a mobile mechanic to look at it and found blocked pipe post filter. Anyway now new pump and filter and familiar with total gas and petrol circuits and back on the road. The filter is in the most inaccessible place, glad I didn't do it.

Not fixed after all, wont start on petrol and no power coming to pump or from relay or along the feed to the pump. Relays all working but power seems to be shut off by the lpg system. It is fitted with a timed relay for the lpg which is working, is the petrol switch off the two pin black box on the vaporiser?

After exhaustive checking it appears to be the timed relay, so ordered one from tinley tech. Hope that will do the trick!

I gave up on lpg. Too much of a ballache, big loss of internal storage and the tank is a dead weight.
My SA was noticeably quicker without the torpedo onboard!

I had a nightmare with mine, sometimes working sometimes not. Convinced myself it was all sorts stripped out the factory alarm changed almost everything (2.1 dj) and turned out to be corrosion in the LPG signal wire running along the back of the engine which was intermittently stopping the pump.

To be fair, any fault is a ball-ache if you don't know how to find it or fix it, and that happens more with LPG just because of most people's lack of familiarity with the technical side of it, despite its simplicity. Most breakdown services won't touch it as they're not trained on it (so usually blame it for any/all breakdowns).

The LPG switch won't need to see a coil pulse signal to start on petrol, and should default to petrol if there's any electrical LPG system fault. The timer relay only delays the switching off of petrol for a second to give a fuel overlap for smoother switching. Other than that it's just like a standard 5 pin relay. If the relay has failed open it's hardly a difficult fix, and logical diagnostics should have tracked it down pretty easily.
