Lighter socket

Going to fit a cigarette lighter socket in the camper dash...as it never had one and would be good for 12v accessories etc.
Anything I should be aware of before fixing the genuine VW one I got from the local T25 breakers?

Anywhere not to mount it on dash... and which wires do I link into?

Take a new feed with fuse just for this socket. At least that way it won't take down any other circuits if it goes awol. Mount wherever practical that has sufficient room behind.

I put two together just to the right of the CD/Radio unit.
Fed them both with a fused supply direct from a free terminal on the rear of the fuse/relay panel.

I used a large taper drill and finished it off with a file, watch out for the heater/air control cables.

Sounds silly but...does it generate much heat...and would this affect some areas of dash?

look out for the "stay" behind the dash just to the right of the glovebox, and dont drill there!

No undue heat generation, but I only run the navi and my mp3 player off it.
Don't actually have the lighter element.

Fitting a cigerette lighter socket to a T25 is easier than most because the dash is made of metal and bolted to the chassis (no earth needed) so you will only need to supply a 1.5/2mm fused live feed to the center terminal.
And for this same reason you have know worries with heat. Just make sure the take off point is up to the current demand.

But most sockets are insulated (including the genuine VW one as it has the eluminated ring around it) so you still need to fit an earth wire off the back - where you conect it is your call.
