Wipers work with no key in?

Post by Shinnster »

Doing little bits on the van today and took it for a spin to check all was ok.
it started to rain and luckily wipers work but I noticed when I turned the van off the wipers kept going.
they seem to be on a permanent live. is that how all these old vans are?

i use a battery disconnect switch so am not worried about any power drain, I just find it weird for them to be wired that way.

Mines an 84 velle and the wipers don’t run unless key in 1st position. Maybe something there?

Like wise mine only work with the key turned, could be a safety issue ie inadvertantly operating them when not needed, does the blower motor work as I think they share the same fuse, could have been rewired as a result of a problem there.

I checked the blower and that only comes on when the key is turned. so something is a miss then!
not even sure where to start on this

i did replace the ignition switch with cheapish one off of ebay last month, but that wouldnt cause this would it?

when it comes to electrics I'm even more of a noob than the mechanical side :(
removed the relay in number 10 and the wipers still work with the ignition off. (just the main speed)
from a quick bit of searching it seems when the wiper motor is failing / about to fail it can cause this issue and give constant power direct from the battery. something to do with the park position of the motor.

I would be inclined to not worry about it, as long as it works along with windscreen washers and has no dodgy wiring.  Maybe somebody did an intermittent wiper mod with a relay unless yours came with that as standard.  Also the blower should only come on with the ignition on so no issues there.

I think it could be a fault in the park mechanism
