Instrument Cluster Swap

Post by Oilline »

Am I able to fit the instrument cluster from my late ‘85 German market petrol van with rev counter and digital clock to my ‘88 Uk market petrol Doka with no rev counter , digital or analog clock? Is the 14 pin connector the same configuration? Also are pins available for the 14 pin connector ? A lot of mine are bent

The wiring is compatible and all there ready to plug and play (after you straighten all the bent terminals out)

There is a short and a long answer to this.

Can the cluster be used? Yes it can.

Will it need any major wiring changes? - that depents on the wiring order on the two connectors.

I am sure 1985 is about the time that the wiring order changed.
So best plan is compare wiring colours at each pin position. -
UPDATE - read my later comment. A quick indication is the connector orientation on the back of the clusters.

The loom connector is quite easy to unclip so that the connector pins can be swapped around to match the cluster.
As for replacement pins - you could look at the Brickworks web shop.

If you are desperate, I have an old pre-facelift loom connector somewhere that I used to test my MG Maestro digital dash with.
It is off a basic 1983 van, but pin shape would still fit.

Only other thing of note, is the cluster connector strip orientation. Early connector strip is vertical and the later cluster strip is horizontal.

Maybe one day I might get it finished

I’m pretty sure mine is the later type set up according to my chassis number and horizontal strip.
Brickworks say out of stock on the pins , I’ll check with them tomorrow.
I did repair my rev counter cluster with a Slaughter House Customs pcb replacement kit. When I fitted it today to replace the basic set up on my Doka the oil light didn’t work, charge light didn’t go off, water temp didn’t register. It was then I saw the condition of the pins on the 14 way plug .
If the wiring is compatible between the two then it’s probably poor connections on the strip that’s causing my problems

I've never seen an early dash with a revcounter, so presumably both the dash and the truck will be the later type.

Depends on the history... a previous owner may have retro-fitted the tachometer.
The sort of thing I would do if I could justify the expense. :)
