Tailgate wiring
Im in the process of reinstating the central locking on my van and the rear wiring has been cut at some point im assuming when the tailgate was replaced.
Iv reconnected the rear heated screen and the central locking wires. But there is a larger core brown earth ehich i cant find a refrence to in the Bentley...
The other sude is rear wash wipe which i no longer have..
Any ideas what the other earth is for ?
(photo taken befire I connected the yellow for central locking)

Re: Tailgate wiring
It may just be a ground link between the hatch and body.

Maybe one day I might get it finished

So just join ut with the other?
Re: Tailgate wiring
There are two earths. Iv used the one that is same diameter as the other white and yelliw for CDL and all works fine the earth that is left is larger diameter

Re: Tailgate wiring
There cannot be many powered items in the hatch of a van.
Being a very thick brown, I would assume a very high current item - or a wire that earths several items.
So what a van could have is -
Central locking -
Two wires that probably swap polarities when locking and unlocking.
Unless you had a retro-fitted door actuator solenoid.
Quite a powerful electro-magnet to unlock the earlier hatch lock mechanisms.
Works by giving a brief forceful tug on a hatch lock operating rod.
Rear wiper motor - if fitted.
Rear washer motor is inside the van - so it cannot be for that.
3rd brake light, although these do not need a heavy gauge cable.
Rear window demister element. -
One for supply and possibly earthed to the hatch, or a wire running to the vehicle body.
My thought is potentially a link to ensure continuity between the hatch and body.
A bit of "belt 'n' braces" in case the hinges get gummed up with 30 years of rust or muck and stuff.

Re: Tailgate wiring
How have you wired the rear window , unthinking it’s that , I’ll take a look today at mine but I think it’s earthed inside the van not directly to the tailgate
Re: Tailgate wiring
Dumb question alert coming now, but did any vans have an additional break light in the rear window?
Maybe it's just something else that you don't have?
E D I T: Just noticed someone already mentioned that

Re: Tailgate wiring
The central locking has a brown a white and a yellow. I have connected them and all works ok I have used the earth that is the same size wire as the white and yellow. The heated rear screen is all black wiring. And the rear wiper moter has its own short tail with an earth. Still at a loss as to what its for as when i test continuity its already earthed...

Re: Tailgate wiring
Like I said - probably just a belt n braces link.
If it all works fine, then I would not lose sleep over it.
Either link to an earth in the hatch or body, or simply insulate the end of the wire.
The choice is yours.
