Alternator kaput ?

Post by MagicWagon »

Hi. All. Am on hols in Wales and I think my alternator may have had it. Alternator light on dash stays on. Voltage at battery doesn't increase when engine running. Measured voltage at blue/green wire coming off alternator when engine running/reved and only getting less than 2 volts. Fanbelt by seems ok. Alternator spinning. Are these symptoms of failed alternator? If so, am I likely to be able to drive far (e.g 150/200miles hope, or am I stuffed ? Thank you.

It could well be the regulator that needs replacing. It's a bit late now but it's always a good idea to carry a spare. If you are on a campsite you could maybe get Brickwerks to post one to the site. https://www.brickwerks.co.uk/voltage-re ... 3-all.html

Aircooled are usually petrol unless there is an Aircooled Lister diesel in the van!

Yeah I guessed I can run it untill the battery dies, but if I don't run anting else, lights, radio etc, what's a rough idea how far I might get ? 1mile, 10 miles, 100 miles ? I know it's how long is a piece of string, but a wild ballpark guess would be great. I can get an alternator tomorrow in shrewsbery. (About 30 miles).

Why replace the alternator when it could well be a regulator that costs a few quid?

Well, that's as maybe. But I'm on holiday and need to get home. Looks like I can get an alternator fairly quickly (eurocarparts) but not do sure about regulator. Also how easy is regulator to replace with it in situ. I envisage trouble getting the springs back in.

That doesn't make any sense to me - you are going to take the alternator off to exchange it but cannot do the same to change the regulator if you cannot do it in situ?

My thought is that I want to get home first, save money second. If I know I can get an alternator tomorrow, but not a regulator, I may as well get the whole thing.
Replacement has no pulley though. Will I need a puller to get the pulley off the old one ?
