Unknown wire

Post by Ragtime.ben »

Can anybody tell me what this wire is? Runs round the rear of the engine bay and has an inline fuse. Goes towards the water pump area at the right hand rear so I wondered if it might be that ? Also has a mangled connector on the end, wondered if this way maybe meant to be in the connecting block on the coil as the block has a female missing ??

I am not familiar with the wiring of the petrol engines, but OE green wire is RPM signal on all '80s VWs
Should go into the black box I assume.

Yes the green is indeed the rpm signal.

I would expect the wire to go to the distributor.
Again I do not know much about the early air-cooled units.
But in my early vehicles, the green would be controlled by the points and condensor.
You should have a green wire with female spade connector coming from the distributor body.

Your green wire should connect to this.

If it is not connected, the coil cannot create the spark for the plugs.

Maybe one day I might get it finished

Are you running the original electronic distributor?

Original electronic distributor and coil yes. Green wire is present from coil to distributor body. This seems to be a slightly different shade than the oe green wire and also has an inline fuse, which made me think it’s not ignition related. Plugs are also sparking and the unknown wire hasn’t been connected since I bought the van. My thoughts were that something to do with the wiring for the Devon conversion.
The black box it may have come from, as it seems the right length and location to go into it. I’ll have to follow it further.

I’m thinking possibly a split charge relay feed
