Dissy Rotor Wear.

Post by maxstu »

My DJ 2.1 Auto is rapidly using dissy rotors. Or a least they require carbon removal from the metal lip.
Yesterday morning the camper refused to start. Checked voltage at end of lead from coil (with ignition on) and voltage fine. Pulled cap and noted rotor had a lot of carbon built up one side only. Not centrally.
Cleaned rotor and engine reluctantly fired up.
Is this a sign timing is out? Or dissy shaft wear? Cheap cap not secured properly. There is side to side movement even when clipped down
Since 2019 running at 5* BTDC for 95 ron petrol.

Could it be the dissy isnt seated in the engine enough or the cap isn't on right?
I suppose a cheap cap might not seat as well as a genuine one.

Hi matey!
What slightly worries me is the dissy caps can rotate a bit even when clipped down. Perhaps l should place cap in middle position?

Hope its not giving you too much of a headache ;)

My cap doesn't seem to rotate all that much when clipped on.
It probably moves about 2mm if that if I try and turn it when clipped down. There is a tiny bit of side movement but I have to really try to make it move as the clips keep it snug as well as it sitting on the relief or whatever the correct term for the seating location is. ;)

Cheers Steve, and thanks for the comments.

Well, no problems over an 80 miles drive today. A bit reluctant to start but running very well.

We (Maxine, my father and four dogs  ) are going on a 1000 mikes grand tour in two weeks, pulling a folding caravan, so building confidence that the old girl won't let me down is crucial.

Have just read up about replacing ECU requires engine retiming. I did an exchange recently. So perhaps that is the issue.

The general consensus from our yankee cousins is setting the timing at 3000rpm is far more efficient, using a template marking the 35 degrees using this template.

Any comments from the forum?

Regards
Stuart
