Need help on Alternator for CU 2.0l ...

Post by danisaez »

Hi all,

been through the wiki and searched the web for hours, but to no avail...

I've got a 1980 VW BUS T3 running a CU 2.0l Aircooled engine, my current alternator (45A)  is starting to get "tired", as I have 2 batteries I'm in search for a more powerfull alternator I can install in it. The thing that I'm struggling to find it, can't seem to find any suitable alternator...  does anyone know of any more powerfull model of alternator I can install / adapt ?

Thanks all...

cheers, Dani

I’m not sure there is a bigger alternator that will fit with the CU and it’s fan

however , 45ah should do your job , assuming you have lead acid batteries, having a 65ah alternator wouldn’t be any advantage frankly , the way lead acid batteries charge , and the way alternators work .

T2 type 4 engine, which is almost identical to the cu has a 45 and 65 amp , I’ll see if I have one to compare though I do t think it’s very much different to the water cooled one

Main battery is still lead, but secondary will shortly be LifePo 105A ...

Option was a 65A alternator. Very rare, but can be made from a 45A air cooled alternator, using the rotor and front plate from the 45A and the body and stator from 65A water cooled alternator.
