Hi all. Can anyone tell me about this please. Viewing a property and this is the fuse box. It seems to have fuse wire and there's a mention of cartridges in the lower box. But also what is the new box all about? Would it be possible to replace this with a circuit breaking board? Any advice would be much appreciated. Cheers. Image

Wow sorry can't help but that's a blast from the past long time since I've seen fuse wire on a card near the electric meter must be 45 years plus in my parents house.

The box above is a smart meter. You can see the display unit unplugged to the right of the fuse board.

I think you'll find that the cartridges are the actual fuses in the box they have wire between them if they blow you just replace the fuse wire in them I shouldn't see there being any problem you getting it replaced with a circuit breaking board.

That's 1970s original wiring, nothing basically wrong with it, it will be simple circuits 5A lighting circuits, 15amp rings for the plug sockets, 30 amp for cooker and immersion heater, house may be split into floors, zones. You don't have a RCD or ECLB device though so you should use them on extension leads to external devices like lawnmowers and extension leads, again back then we didn't have many things that used power outside
I lived in a late 70s built house for more than 30 years, it had one light circuit, one ring, one cooker and 1 immersion heater circuit, only blew the light fuse three times and ring a couple of times, we never had an electric cooker so that circuit wasn't used by us. And older appliances used more power than the modern equivalents. As long as you know where the fuse wire and screwdriver are and where a torch is even if it blows the light circuit during darkness it's not much faff to rewire a cartridge, only real hassle is you have to switch the main switch to off as a safety before removing the cover so if you have mains clocks you will have to reset them after an outage, that didn't used to be a problem but in the video age it was of a problem as some didn't have small memory batteries so resetting the clock was something you'd have to do.
