Refitting front indicators - nylon insert nut

Post by sweetaswesty »

I'm refitting the front indicators to our Westfalia, soon as hopefully...
But on the VW parts diagram the self tapping screws which hold the front indicators to the body are shown fitting through a plastic/ nylon insert nut - which doesn't seem to be available anywhere? They seem to be a common fitment on various parts of various VWs - 42 of them maybe.
Does anyone have any ideas on how to source an alternative? Or is a totally different fix possible?
The rear indicators in their box with everything else are held to the body with self tappers and speed nuts, would this work in the front?
Thanks for any thoughts!
This is what they look like and where they go:

They should be fixed like the rear lights, never seen them with plastic.

Thanks, that's really helpful.  I actually couldn't remember removing any thing like that, and I had thought they were fixed with speed nuts like the back, but it was a while ago, and I was checking the parts diagrams for replacing the rusty old screws...
And also thanks Rob for the contact number for Mick Crowe that's going to be useful.

Thanks, yes, that's the kind of thing but though round those ones are designed to fit in a square hole and also they're too small for the necessary screw diameter.
But I'm OK with using speed nuts - I'm reasonably sure that's what was on their originally.

My 86 have metal clip type screw nuts there as I remember. Similar to the ones mounting the rear lamp

Thanks everyone - I'll go with the steel clips as at the back. It's weird though that the VW parts diagrams show these nylon inserts rather than the clips when it seems that VW actually used the steel clips as an original fitting.

Mine have got J clips -  like the idea of plastic ones though, may get the kids at school to design and print some on the 3D printer - 'Iterative design process' :ok

probably found the plastic inserts broke after a couple of bulb changes so went to the clips; the parts catalogue does have a Imagefew mistakes in, I hadn't noticed this one

Could be Aidan, plastic can easily allow another thread to be cut and hold would soon become vauge - especially with over eager tightening.

I've got a box of those J-clips in the garage - can't remember what I bought them for - think it was my lotus.  One of those situs where buying 100 only costs 10% more than buying 20.  Same as pop rivets - got bloody hundreds of them!
