Finally fitted isolation block kindly donated by Mocki...
Added a regulator and tested using method above. Ran at high speed with a 240v drill and alternator output topped 13.8 volts. That's good enough for a spare alty. So many thanks to all contributors. Still learning.
Who would have thought the isolator block plays such a minor/major part.

isolation of the positive from the negative is pretty damn crucial tho...

A quick check reveals it was Rob. Sooo. A big thanks to Rob for donating the isolator block and to all for the replies.

I have been called a lot of things in my time, but Mocki is a first.
