Halls sender - fitting and timing

As per other post - I am watching closely a starting when hot / stalling issue on my bus. (T25 1985 DG 1.9). I'm only changing one thing at a time, and we're all good right now.
If I need to change the Halls Sender in the future - I found and read the guides on here etc as part of the whole distributor replacement - I wanted to ask: If I just want the change the Halls Sender - do I need to remove the distributor? And if I don't, can I assume I don't need to wprry about setting the timing again - if the engine runs fine before I start?
