Thanks very much Oldiebut. That's another thing not to worry about then. Now I just need to get a feel for what speed I am doing without relying on instrumentation. Feel the force Luke!

you are not wrong there......

I am preparing the van for the VOST certificate with electrical and gas certification...
It will be worth the effort, (or so I keep telling myself), as I will have all up to date gas and heating equipment..
Reflected in the value...

Does anyone know the difference between an 85mph dial and a 100mph dial? i.e. When and on what models were they originally produced for? I have an 85mph dial, which runs about 10mph too quick, so would love to know whether it is the wrong clock for my 1983 Vanagon. Thanks for all of your help - gratefully appreciated.

Sorry, i couldn't help myself

I reckon the 85mph must just be a lower spec model.

Thanks very much. That makes sense. Mine was imported from California.

Did you ever sort this?

Being late to the party, as always...
I thought that I would throw in my input.

I am not sure why a USA spec speedometer with 805 on it would register any different to a UK spec speedometer with 805 on it.

From my understanding, 805 is more or less the "typical" speedo figure for a van fitted with standard 14" rims and standard 185w 85/14 commercial tyres.

So there can only be two answers.
The USA speedometer drive is faulty...
Or you have much bigger wheels and tyres fitted.

As far as I am aware, USA miles are the same size as UK miles. Even though they cannot measure gallons.
Tee hee.

Now then - as for the 99,999 miles limit.
We are talking very old technology, so very few vehicles were expected to last 100,000 miles before the engine became buggered, or the body shell rotted away.

Early vans had the 99,999 limit and then rolled back to 0.
Mine has 129,000 on it.

Thanks Robsey

I will take a look at my tyres, as they may be the problem, because it still runs at about 10mph too quick. However, I am not really worried either way, as the answers I got above convinced me that it doesn't really matter what the mileage says anyway, and I can't really go quick enough to trouble the speed cameras. Once I fix other issues (getting fridge to work, coolant leakage), I will consider buying a new set of clocks (assuming tyres are not the problem), but am reluctant to tart about with things too much when I am not certain what the problem is. My main problem is that I have yet to find a garage that I have faith in, as I have found that the info I get on here has been a lot better than the 'expert' camper garage I was using. If and when I find someone, I might be a bit more brave.
