Replacing the starter battery

Post by patrickpawsey »

Hi everyone,

I am about to replace the starter battery in our 1990 1.9dg, as it's not holding charge any more (I had to disconnect the manifold heater to get it to pull in the solenoid even today).

So I am planning on getting a Yuasa 100 from gsf as it's cheapish and available locally.

I currently have an 096 installed, see the pic for full specs.

The current battery is quite tight in the bay, though there should be room for the 100.

My question is how do you get the old battery out?

It looks like you have to remove the seat, as it seems the battery is tucked under the lip of the rear of the swivel Captain's seat base.

If that's the case, is it just a matter of undoing the four nuts on the seat base? Rear two are visible in the pic.

And are here any gotchas about putting it back or just bolt it back up?

Many thanks, stay safe,

Patrick

Anyhow you turn the seat base round sideways I believe , ideally after sliding the seat off all the way

Hi yes it is at the stock price, I think it comes down to about 60 with some discount code I found!

Thanks for the info I will investigate the seat base.

Turns out you can get the driver's seat off if you take it right to the front of the base, pull up the little catch on the other side from the forwards/back lever as well, then wiggle it off when it's basically becoming one with the steering column..

Then the base swings all the way round and badum, battery out.

You do know you could take the seat off with it turned away from the steering ?

Glad you sorted it

Try and fit some kind of rubber caps on the terminals?

Terminal covers are on the list with the new battery. There is a wooden job that does slide over them as part of the cover but it's not ideal..

Or getting a different battery that has in built sort of terminal covers flaps, which might make a neater job of covering the terminal and the bolt on the side where the other feeds are then off. Just a question of who has what stock locally really.

I did try to get the seat out sideways past the steering wheel but couldn't find a way that it didn't foul the wheel - maybe mine is just nearer the wheel! Or maybe it could have gone a bit diagonally.. to be honest I had turned it round so many times by the time I got it off I think I was just glad to have the thing out of the way!
I'll try it sideways again to get it back on the base..

That bolt is for the battery clamp I think , hard to see from your picture

But prob won’t work with a swivel base so you need
