Low voltage disconnect

Post by slowcoach »

Hi all,
Have any of you a recomendation for a low voltage isolator for a leisure battery? Something simple and self contained (In a housing) that's not very expensive? Seem to vary wildly in price.
Thanks!

I am keen to know,
someone said it is complicated as the voltage is low when under load..
so we could get cut off early for the fridge,
and late for the tiny led..
Happy to get a good bit of kit,
as its already cost me dear, two new batteries killed,
easily done.
Need something foolproof.

the point is a tiny led wouldnt trigger it, the fridge would....
a tiny load wouldnt matter and wouldnt bring the battery down and so wouldnt be a risk .

i bought a cheapo china ( insert wild media fear here) low cut out for a project a few years ago, it worked fine, but it only worked if it was wired to a big ( enough to do the job) relay and was right on the battery , if it was down the cable run it triggered with voltage falsely .

This company do a range of them, though they no longer supply them in enclosures = http://www.reuk.co.uk/wordpress/reuk-sh ... nects-lvd/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I no longer use an actual LVD as I don't want it to just cut off everything without warning, so I use a £3 gadget that just sounds a buzzer when the voltage drops to a user set level. Here is a link = https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/12V-On-Board ... SwyRdb49o0" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

The problem with them is they use power out of the battery to work, it might be only milliamps but they have a nasty habit of growing up to become amps. Left standing the LVD will flatten the battery quicker than without.

ive jumped the gun a bit and bought this Victron one:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Victron-Ener ... 2749.l2649" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

the prices vary wildly for this, so £40 seems decent. I know theres far cheaper ones like ghost has linked to, but I did want something that did the whole job and without needing relay wiring or housing in something.im getting new batteries soon so thought it best to finally sort this. I run an old compressor fridge (draws 5amp on the pump) and 130w solar. the fridge has beaten my batteries up a few times on warm muggy days and nights with no sun :/ 65a draw seems a lot, Im not going anywhere near that (would anyone in our vans?)

I feel like a belt and braces...
buzzer goes off to alert me to plug in or drive it,
then the cutout saves the day and disconnects if no joy.
Both great.

How have you got on SlowCoach?
My new batteries are in, and I want to wire this Victron,
does it matter that I have two batteries in parallel,
the Victron installation diagram only has one.
And I want to wire in a mains charger,
that is not in the installation wiring diagram either.

yeah its up and running. setting the voltage for the disconnect worked, although its not the most user friendly, youll probably only do that once. I think i chose 11.5v. ive not wired up an audible alarm for it - theres provision for it though which would be simple enough. ive not triggered it yet even, since theres been no camping, but theres a pulsing led to show its connected, and i think it pulses differently when its tripped.

doesnt matter how many batteries you have (i have 2 aswell). just have this unit between the battery and your outgoing loads (which are probably on a mini fuse block or something). then any load you use will be pulled through the victron lvd and monitored. i have solar charger and alt power coming in to the hot side of the batteries, which doesnt affect the outgoing side of the load. hope this helps!
