Fuel pump power on T25 2.1 petrol

Post by adams.neil »

Hi,

Looking for some advice. My 2.1 T25 fuel-injected petrol broke won't run. Symptoms are it was running fine and then just died at a set of lights and wouldn't go again. Turned over fine but just wouldn't start. It is sparking and there's fuel in the tank. It was indicating about 1/3rd full but put a load more in just in case.
When turning it over there's no smell of petrol that I'd usually expect, so I suspect a fuel supply issue. Haynes manual says a simple test is to feel if the fuel pump vibrates when ignition is first turned on. It doesn't. It then says check if the fuel pump relay clicks, which it does. Then say to check power to the fuel pump when first turned on, but there isn't any.
Any ideas on where to check next would be much appreciated.

Also, I might try to source a replacement fuel pump relay to at least rule that out, but have struggled to find any. Any pointers for those too please?

Many thanks

Neil

There are two identical relays in black box. Pump and fuel injection.
Swap over to test pump. Pump should prime, on turn of ignition key, for half a second only. Then run continually when engine running.

Next test is to directly feed 12 volts to pump via an external source. Use your leisure battery?

Maxstu.

Thanks for the advice. I hooked up the leisure battery to the pump and it ran fine. I also swapped the relays but still no power getting to the pump. Any thoughts on next step? Head scratching time.

Thanks

Neil

I have seen no mention of the fuse. Is that still intact and making a good connection ?

On the diagnosis front you need to be checking for supply to the relay, and then continuity check on the feed from the relay connection to the +ve on the pump and the earth route from the pump.

No fuse l think. As above. Check pump wiring and earth.
So your pump works. It must be lack of 12 volts from ignition to pump via relay. And check you have 12volts at relay terminals for pump and fuel injection

Ah! Just rereading your first post. So relay click with ignition on. Then must be duff wiring going to pump. Check wiring for 12 volts with multi meter or even a 12 volt auto bulb. Rear lamp bulb ideal
Try not to spark up with wiring though. Near a petrol source :run

Its likely earth wire. Try with leisure battery offering a suitable size diameter wire from positive terminal to live on pump. If no go......
Try connecting a wire from neg on pump to suitable earthing on vehicle such a suspension mount bolt or clean of area of chasis. Ignition on for this one

Maxstu,

Thanks for your help. Managed to trace it to a broken earth wire coming back into the engine bay.

Thanks again for your help.
