Odometer stopped working

Post by patrickpawsey »

The odometer stopped turning, and the trip counter, the other day. The speedo seems to be bouncing less too (it used to bounce until 40 now it's pretty steady, with occasional bouts of dancing).
Is no working mile counter an mot failure? And is it dash out to get to the speedo to repair it?

It doesn't matter for an MOT. just need the instruments to be taken off the dash, either the driven gear wheel has cracked and slipping on the shaft or the shaft has slid along out of mesh.

Thanks bigherb. Does the bouncing speedo mean taking the wheel off and looking at the cable end (never looked at the wheel end of a speedo cable before).

Your Welcome just one bit of advice when removing the speedo needle make sure you do it over something soft like a carpet not like I did over a tiled floor because that needle is very brittle and it will snap like mine did

When i bought my van, my speedo never worked, took wheel cover of left wheel and found no circlip holding the speedo cable end and the square hole that the speedo fits into was out of shape and allowing the wheel to rotate but not the speedo cable, i have wedged a small nail in the square hole against the speedo cable as a temp measure until i get round to replacing with new cover housing and speedo cable, so far i have driven over 500 miles and speedo is still working fine, mine does bounce unto 40 mph and then settles after that speed.

Steveo9007 I tried that with mine but mine never worked it started to turn the cable but no joy untill I put the spacer behind the clocks but there is a little trick to put that into shape no nail needed just take the Dome shaped thing off that the cable goes through put it on a something you can beat the hole with to flatten the metal till the hole closest a little bit so you can reshape the hole to fit the speedo cable again parts are getting hard to find for these vehicles so some times you'll have to adapt things

When replacing the speedo needle you'll see right on the edge of the speedo face at about half past six a tiny tiny white paint mark. the needle should be aligned with this, pushed home and then lifted carefully over the stop pin.

I fixed my odometer last night, the spindle had slid out and the worm gear was not engaging. It was also reading a very optimistic 100kph against 50mph on satnav so hopefully the above has cured that.
