Blown fuse. Twice!

Post by mariner »

Hi all. Fuse 10 blew pretty badly the other day when wipers and blower were both going - blower on full blast.

Replaced it and drove the van, using wipers, not blower so much and everything seemed okay.

It blew again this morning (not so dramatically) when the blower was on full and wipers going. Only connection is that it was early morning with heavy frost and I’d driven about the same distance (1/8 mile) each time!

Red 16 amp fuse in both times - should be big enough shouldn’t it?

The blower motors probably on its way out if its blowing the fuse. Also Id recommend splitting the wipers onto their own fuse.

Is the blower motor making a squeaking noise on all settings, as mentioned above it could be on the way out, mine had those symptoms before it eventually packed up along with a strong electric burning smell.

Yep! A common fault with pre-86 vans running torpedo style fuses. Especially when using wipers and dash heater at same time.q
As Stesaw says, split the fusing to rectify the fault.
I think there may well be an article in Wiki.

Also make sure the contacts in the fuse holder are nice and clean as a dirty/ tarnished connection can cause a fuse to blow/ melt.

Could be, clean the connections as said, but more than likely that the fans on it's way out.

Not a hard job to do really. While youre in the heater box replacing the fan, I'd suggest replacing all the foam with the kit from Brickwerks.

Cheers. I’m a novice with electrics so when you say not too hard, is it simply a case of remove and refit as was? What’s the benefit to replacing the foam whilst I’m in there? Thanks!

Best thing to do is take your time, take pictures so you don't forget how things go together.
If I recall wiring wise, there's just the connector on the fan and the ground wire.
But as you said its a case of just putting thing back as they were.

The foam in the heaterbox more than likely perished a long time ago, unless someone's been in there and replaced it. The bonus will be less of or no whistle from the vents as you drive.
