2nd break down.... halls unit?

Post by ash1293 »

Just got home from our second break down with the van, both locally and appeared easily solved....... hmmmm

Background - had the odd cut out coming to a roundabout/junction but seemed no real pattern, suspected fuel as tank had been dropped recently.

Leads/cap/rota arm/plugs are all relatively new, replaced with quality items at last service.

1st break down about 6weeks ago, stopped at lights, wouldn’t start. Rolled off to the side and quickly found power to coil but no spark.
Nipped off home for back up coil and all seemed well. New Bosch coil then ordered & fitted.

2nd break down, no real mileage covered as been busy with work etc. Been out for a drive 30mins or so parked up an hour, then back again. Close to home same again, no spark. Waited 10-15mins, just the same. So again thankfully local so went for the spare ( I know it should have been in the van )
This time on my return I retried the new coil and it fired straight up.

My thoughts are now pointing towards the ignition amplifier or halls unit.
While I do have spare unit and dizzy they are both unknown to me so before I go swapping out I was just wondering if anyone has any thoughts on the matter.

Brickworks is the obvious choice if I have to replace Halls unit but a quick look round shows several amplifiers, ignoring the non branded.....

Beru - £41
Hella - £29
febi - £13

Beru is what brickwerks stock so know they will be ok, but thought Hella & Febi are/were reputable also?

The ignition amp, in my experience doesn’t give any second chances,  nor advance warning .
the last time I had one go , I drove into a lay-by perfect ok, urned the engine off , had a brew , and it wouldn’t start when I wanted to go ( the fact I was towing another broken down T25s over the top of the north York moors is nothing to do with it ) it was running fine ( if working hard ) I switched it off , it never showed any signs of issues .
replaced the ignition amp with the spare I carry , and away we went .

Ive had lots of issues with hall units slowly failing over time, intermittent starting, poor running, cutting out, sometimes restart immediately, sometimes an hour later once they’ve cooled down

Cheers for input, decided that m going with the Beru amplifier & hall sender from brickwerks.

Leaning towards the hall unit but as the rest of ignition system will be new for the extra cost replacing amplifier and putting mine to spares kit makes sense.

While other males are cheaper, it’s the usual..... brickwerks know their stuff.

Trying to follow this thread to enhance my own knowledge, am I correct in thinking that the hall sender is the same as the "baseplate and pick up unit" referred to in the Haynes manual and the separate unit the ignition module amplifier which is causing the faults here.

Yes the base plate unit ( hall unit) picks up the signal

Thanks so many spares you have to consider carrying for a just in case situation.

Once a bigger engine is fitted a trailer with a spare van becomes an option!

I realised I never got back to this, with work being hectic and other issues cropping up I’ve not had chance to use the van much.

The halls unit was not too bad to fit, and seems to have solved the issue but only time will tell after a few more longer journeys. On the test drive throttle was sticking open, so a new throttle cable was next on the list as had frayed at the carb end.
