Driver door stuck/remote central locking recommendations

Post by johnwayne »

Really weird one yesterday.

For reference my driver door has never locked, the lock button just dangles uselessly and the lock barrel in the door has never done anything.

So yesterday I got out and closed it behind me but when I got back to the van the door was 'locked', both inside and outside handles moved but nothing happened. The only thing that may have been a first is that the window was fully open when I got out and closed the door, so I suspect it has caught/knocked something which has engaged the door lock.

Can anyone provide a picture or diagram of what the door mechanism should look like when working properly?

Also, can anyone recommend a decent aftermarket remote central locking system? the sliding door is not an issue but would like something for the front doors and possibly tailgate.

I bought one of the basic universal kits from fleabay, has worked well for the last 10 years or so. They are about £13- £15

In situ, the lock mechanism is pretty-much enclosed by the internal door skin.

All you can see is the vertical link rod to the door locking button.

The rod coming forward towards the internal release lever.

And that rusty metal flat bar you see is what the external door handle mechanism pushes against to open the door.

Just like most restorers, I just happen to have a lock from my old rusty door sat about in my back yard.

So I took it out and gave it a bit of clean to show how the link rods go together.

Image

So first of all, the door pin rod.

Image

I was surprised to find that this is only pushed onto the end of the actuating lever.
The lever has a shallow curved profile

The plastic rod retainer piece has a similar shaped socket.

So it can only go together one way.

Very simple.

The door release rod simply hooks around the metal bracket in the bottom corner of the latch assembly.

Image

The metal bracket is shaped so that the rod wont simply drop off.
It is quite a fiddle getting the rod out, so it is probably best removing the catch from the door casing first.

Two No 3 Philips countersunk head screws in my case.

And that is it.
Simple-pimple.
