Replacing Pop Top Hinges

Post by flz2020 »

I have a side elevating pop top and I need to replace one of the hinges . Is it possible to do this without removing the gas struts? I need to reposition the hinges as the old holes in the fibre glass roof are a bit rotten. Any recommendations on where I can source hinges at a reasonable price is welcomed also.

Cheers!

I found its easier if you take the rams off as then it will sit right as you mark out for new ones. Can you not just make a bigger plate/washers to fit inside to spred the load on the fibre glass roof?

I can give it a shot. The reason I might just reposition the hinge is that the problem is that the previous owner did a fibreglass repair where the current hinge is which is now crumbling. The difference in thickness of that area also causes the roof to not sit straight.
I was under the impression that if you remove the struts they need to be replaced, which is why I wanted to avoid removing them but is that not the case?

I noticed shortly after buying my camper that the end hinge on the roof was loose and either missing or the studs/rivets had given way.  As a temporary measure I fitted nuts and bolts through the holes supported with washers.  I was probably fortunate that it was and end hinge and I could get access both sides. The protruding thread was grinded back smooth with the nut and well greased each year along with the other hinges.  Although intended as a temporary fit they have been there for six years so have not had to do nothing else apart from keep them lubricated. You could probably put a bracket inside instead of washers but that was all I had to hand.

I'm sure I got a set of 3 for £25, with the £25 ones being brass.
