Hi is it always preferable to remove the tailgate leaving the hinges attached? Likely to be a one man job and it looks easier to get at the hex bolts. Thanks.

I removed mine on my own with hinges attached. It's heavy and 2 people would have been much easier. It helps if you take the glass out first.
