gas strutts for a bike rack

Post by Cycleaddict »

The gas strutts on my rear door are on the way out and need replacing-at some point I intend to use a bike rack-will I need stiffer strutts to counter the weight of the bikes- if so, where is a good place to get them from? Have seen some on tbe bay listed as 800nm heavy duty-just wondering if anyone here has any experience of this? As always- any input very much appreciated. Thanks.

I had bike rack on my van ,I replaced the struts as they were worn anyway with standard replacement struts and they were fine with a bike rack fitted. :ok

Standard struts are just fine with the weight of an empty rack.

If you found struts that'd cope happily with the weight of a rack with two or more bikes on, then you could probably damn near do pull-ups on the door with no bikes/rack on.

ninja tom has a pair of ally tubes slipped over the struts and they act as a stop , really simple and effective

brickwerks did and may still do advertise ones that work well with bike racks not sure if they are any stronger than standard tho, like said id be amazed if they would cope with bikes on as well. adam

I guess so-think standard will be fine going on advice provided-they are carbon framed and pretty light-around 7.5kg each so nothing too heavy. The other consideration is that at the moment my wife complains about the boot dropping back down and hitting her on the head as the strutts are shut. If I uprate them she'll complain that she can't get it back down anymore! Like u said-can't have it both ways!!

Mine were replaced a short while ago and the first time I opened the boot, it nearly gave me an upper cut! I'm hoping it'll be more like normal with the weight of a rack and my 7kg bike!
