Tailgate wiring gromit

Post by jigarai »

How do people get the wiring from it for the washer hose and wiper wiring to seat in properly? I’ve been at it on and off all day. Swearing cajoling. A range of tools. Asking it if it wants to talk about its feelings. Nothing. The de mister side is done. Easy peasy. The other one. F@%* no. Tips welcome. Image

Have you got the correct grommet, as each side is different?

AFAIK the wiring goes in the left grommet and only the washer pipe in the right.

Thanks ZsZ interesting to note. It would help. The old wiper wiring I have replaced certainly my went through with the washer pipe. Bit of a pain as I’ve not got enough cable of the right colours to make the longer run. If no success by other means I’ll order some though. For now I’ve got some silicone lubricant spray somewhere. That’s my next resort.

Done it! Thanks for the tip. I was too zoomed in to think of that.

Extra cable on the way to route the wiper power the other way. And a new wiper motor. The old one appear to be completely seized.

The rear demister is however now working for the first time since Ive had the van certainly!!! Image

this has come at a great time, as i have these both to do on mine! on mine the washer wiring is in the same grommet as the washer tube like yours! how are you routing yours from the other side?
also, I dont suppose you video'd your process for both grommets did you?
ive been putting this off as i didnt want to mess it up!

Heya Shinnster, I’ve not videoed it Im afraid but it’s fairly straight forward. A decent crimping tool and something to get the spade terminal out of the connectors teally help.

As you I pulled the old stuff out i used electrical tape to attach some string so I could feed it back the same route.

The connector for the rear defroster is behind the courtesy light for the back left seat. I replaced the cable all the way from there to the connection window itself.

Window washer hose was the same from washer bottle to the jet. I released the jet from behind and pulled it out to swap the hose over as it was a pita to get at.

Feeding through the rubber grommets was fairly straightforward with a bit of patience.

To get the grommets to seat I used a plastic trim removing tool. Once you get a bit of it over the lip it’s just a case of working around it. Fairly easy without the extra cable in with the washer hose.

I’ve not gone back in to do the wiring for the wiper yet but will just be a case of routing it across from the connector on the right to to left hand grommet. I think it’ll be fine as there’s plenty of room in there at the moment.

Remember not to terminate the cables until you’ve fed them through the grommets.

I also replaced the three earth cables - one through the grommet, one for the wiper motor and one from the window defroster to the tailgate.

The wiper motor was completely seized so have had to replace that.

Hope that’s helpful. Feel free to ask or send me a DM if needs be.

I’ll also update here when I get around to putting the wiper motor and wiring back in. :-)
