2.1DJ Oil Cooler

Post by maxstu »

Ive decided not to put this on the temporary DG1900 lm using for now. I will use the Digijet system though. Any issues?

Also, pulled the top from thermostat housing and the thermostat looks brand new. Yet never noticed a direction arrow before!

Lastly, leave top housing off thermostat until engine is in place or add now? Use some gasket sealant on o'ring?

Regards
Stuart

I didn't use any sealant on my thermostat o ring, just plonked it in and that was that. Dunno if you should put it on before you might catch it and damage it if its on, and being plastic it wouldn't take kindly to that kinda thing.

Put it together before putting it in , i have never damaged one, much more likely to damage the oil fill tube in my experience , and i have never removed one of those for a engine swap either .

no goo on the “O” ring , just make sure its all spotlessly clean and free of dirt before assembly and copper slip the bolts that hold the top on AND the thermostat to the head

Forgot to ask, Steve...what method do you use to stop torque converter from coming out?
Also less need to drop the gearbox and engine si far cos autos dont need to clear spigot shaft?

DG's don't have oil coolers do they, so no  - leave it off.

From what I gather stu isn't putting it on the engine, I think he wanted clarification on what to do with it while the 2.1 its attached to is out of the van.

Thanks Martin & Steve. :ok

I was just confirming what l already kind of knew. DG's dont run an oil cooler. I was wondering if there is any benefit from fitting up the cooler to the DG, though?
My camper is auto, and pulls a small caravan. Yet have done so before when this temp. engine was in a previous camper manual five speeder without issue.
Decided not to fit cooler to temporary engine (perhaps not so temp looking at the sorry external state of the fubarred 2.1). Have blocked the cooler to thermostat housing for now. This way l can turn key ready the rebuilt 2.1 on the workbench.

I mean if you're using the 2.1 thermostat housing you can always put a cooler on if you need, I dunno if you'd need to drop the oil but you'd need to get the longer threaded bit off the oil filter/cooler on the 2.1 and fit it to the 1.9. If you needed it that is.
Might be added insurance but I guess depends how hard the engine is worked.

Cheers Matey :ok
I figure on about eight weeks to sort out the poor old DJ. Then again we both are running the worlds' longest rebuild threads
:rofl
Could be the 1.9 stays in there a lot longer. So may well use the cooler too.

IMHO keep the whole 2.1 cooling system, it's been run with the fi and everything else, it's easy to swap the oil filter pipe and fit the oil cooler/warmer, auto and tows, and ecu controlled, speed up the warm up, saves the wear on the engine bearings

Yep. Makes total sense. Will fit it.
Whats the technique for removing the longer filter pipe from the poor old DJ?
