They are quite thin so not sure it would be wise to use them to try undo the threaded bit... But could work, i'd be careful :ok

Well, l thought l had two nuts!
Back to square one. I dont want to retro fit the cooler block. It a bugger to do and means draining coolant again.
Any ideas, folks? Will it take vice grips and heat?

It's coming out using heat and old filter. I locked the cooler retaining nut against a washer then the filter. Worked a treat.

Thanks matey! :ok
But have wasted about fours today trying to get the old DG union out in freezing foggy conditions. Finally managed. BTW I had to remove engine carrier to get at it.
Then found union on the DJ oil cooler threads in further than an early DG. SO off with three threads.
Hope lm doing the right thing!

Do you mean its threaded in more or there are more threads than it needs so it sticks out more than needed?
Sadly I've no clue on differences so cannot help.

Will give it another go...

In an early DG the oil filter union pipe only goes in to the engine block by about five revolutions and is continuously threaded.

Whereas, for the DJ engine, the union pipe sits about eight revolutions inside the engine block, with an unthreaded bit in the middle where the cooler sits. Then retaining nut and finally oil filter on the other end.

Putting the double ended threaded union pipe from a DJ inside an early DG engine block causes issues....it mean unless the union pipe is cut down, the sandwich cooler and retaining nut cant be tightened. It runs to the unthreaded bit and locks before getting oil tight. So l took the hacksaw to it and removed about 10mm. Fits fine now.

Which leads me to this question. Brickwerks offer a full kit to upgrade DG to DJ cooling. Yet no mention of cutting union pipe. Perhaps its compatible with late DG's only. But not the early version?

Ah, I getcha now, I knew they were different, just didn't know how far they threaded in ;)
Maybe as it says "1.9 WBX with the later cooling system", I assume might mean the late engines due to late cooling system perhaps?

Ive got three engines here. Two early DG's (one in the camper now) and the DJ. Both early DG engines run five revolutions on the union pipe before locking up.
Would care to hear from someone who has converted later DG to DJ cooling with oil cooler/warmer to confirm otherwise
