Just wondering if everyone uses the specialised tools when working on their vans.
I need to remove my fuel pump and seen I need tool 2086a (£150!) and 2066 with gauge (£110) so that's already £250 before the 240 plus vat for the rebuild.
How do you guys do it? Is there some underground cheap tool market I don't know about!?

Re: Vw tools
My understanding is that you only need 2068a if you're planning on removing the engine at the same time. If you're retiming the pump with the engine still in-situ then you're supposed to be able to line up the various marks on the clutch / bell housing and injection pump sprocket / console - see section 23-24 of the injection system manual. If you have removed the engine then Dieselkontor in Germany have 2068a for EUR 91.82.
I'm not sure there's a simple way around the need for 2066, although Brickwerks do the adaptor sleeve on its own if you already have a suitable DTI (Dial Test Indicator), or can pick one up from eBay. If you're ordering 2068a from Dieselkontor, then they also do a Bosch timing kit for EUR 29.99.
There's a quite good guide to pump timing on Vince Waldon's website here.

Cheers,
It was the Peter Russek I was reading but didn't realise it was with engine removed
Stupidly I just thought it would be a case of taking some bolts off then bolting it back on when fixed ha. expensive hobby these vans.

Re: Vw tools
Be advised just because stuff is listed on Dieselkontor website doesn't mean they actually have it in stock in my experience, but they are quick to respond to enquiries/orders
Neither are all the tools still available from VW, some are because they are still in use, sometimes slight variants on the ones of our vans' era, but a lot are nla and won't be remade, even if you go direct to the oem and ask nicely
Worst of all many dealers destroyed their old tools rather than let them onto the market, usually at the order of VW, same with manuals, key code books and key cutting machines, philistines

Keys and locks are one thing I don't strugle with being a cobbler and all. Must have about 6 sets of keys lying about!

An up and running (albeit grossly untidy) workshop, a lifetimes stack of hoarded materials and a fully functioning set of head marbles is my solution to many special tools. In fact I can't envisage life without either.

Occasionally you can’t do some jobs without the proper tools, setting the fuel pump up is one of them, you can get them very close, a diesel garage would probably set it up for an 1-2 hrs Labour
