Reconditioned gearbox

Post by mike9009 »

Hi
Happy New Year all.  Not posted for a while, which is a good sign.

Took our 1982 2.0cu out for a run today.  My 4 speed gearbox has been noisy for sometime (ten years??  ) but has finally failed. Third gear is toast, second gear is strangely gone quiet and sounds like a turbine).  When I went into third today it very noisily banged and failed.

My mechanic had said the 'lay shaft' was worn a few months ago and the box would fail at some point.

So, now looking for recommended routes forward.  I live on the Isle of Wight and have a trusted mechanic who can install a new box, so just looking for recommendations on reconditioning etc.

Many thanks......

Resurrecting this thread.

What a nightmare this has been.  Been let down a few times, but I think I have a route forward now.

I have purchased a failed DK box from eBay which is being delivered to John Walklett shortly for a refurb.  Then said box will be delivered back to me and I will get the two swapped over.  Anyone need a failed box??

Next question is, what clutch kit would people recommend for DK box with CU engine?  Anything else worth replacing at the same time (linkage weak points, for example?).

Gawd, I have missed driving the old girl......

Thanks again.....
