You can rebuild your LDA for around £40 I did mine with a kit from germany.
Is it the LDA shaft seal leaking or possible a split in a injector bleed off hose... I actually had a small leak on the nipple that the bleed off attaches to and gotva local diesel specialist to replace the nipple.

Leaking leak off pipe will cause poor /difficult starting. How did the garage not spot all the leaking diesel????

I couldn't see where the leak came from in the short time I had before I was told off for looking at van on Xmas eve ha.

It seems like it must be quite big as its a steady drip with the engine running. None of the fuel hoses have clamps on the end and the pipe from the filter has petrol written on is this normal?

Will try fixing the lda and see if that sorts out the leak. It's never easy is it?

@Bryce - did you figure this out. I'm in a similar boat to all your cold start problems aswell as the fuel leak.

Curious to know whether the LDA fixed/helped things?

The fuel leak was from the one the main gaskets in the pump which I ended up getting rebuilt.
After having the pump rebuilt and timing reset I still use the cold start lever to start the van. Ijust leave it out all the time as it only has an effect at lower rpm I believe?
It starts pretty much on the button now from cold but had to add a resister to glow plug sensor to get it to start easier when hot.
What's up with yours?

Thanks for the reply. Mine could well be the same issue.

Its a new to me truck having got it just before Christmas. Just like you reported its excessively smokey on start up and refuses unless the lever is pulled out.

There is air bubbles getting into the fuel lines that is caused it to be a little hiccupy/missing when cold and I'm not sure the lever is advancing as much as it should. I'll start by replacing the fuel lines and therefore hopefully illuminating any bubble issues. I'm also wondering if the pump is worn, the cold start lever may well be advancing to match where the normal timing should be rather than acting as an advance if that makes sense?

After that I guess its just down to working my way through Baxters smokey thread and maybe doing a compression test? - unless you have any other recommendations.

P.s this is a little down on my priority list as the van kindly developed a 3rd and 4th transmission whine over the weekend

If you can get the tappets checked and set I would possibly start there as that made the most difference to my starting and smoke problems.
Also the best advice I was given was that these vans are over 30 years old and came off the production line smoking on start up so as long as its not constant or excessive its OK!

Definitely that re tappets. Most overlooked item on the JX as people dont even know they even exist. They are a service item.

To the original post - get everything in fine fettle, follow Simons smokey thread, ensure pump timed right.

You dont need to ever use the fuel advance in the UK. -20 in Austrian alps perhaps.

Not sure where you are located op, but these jobs are bread and butter to someone like Simon so perhaps a trip to him to spanner it all to fine fettle.
