Engine cuts out

Post by southernscouse »

Hi I need help 1986 1.9dg got it back from the garage after they fitted a new clutch it looks like they had the engine out got it home running with tickover set high

Engine was running on lpg and drove to the garage it has a Blos carb fitted by camper shack years ago never had a problem
It’s also fitted with a Weber dat carb for when on liquid gold also fitted more than 10years ago and never been a problem
Now it won’t start on gas which it always did do no matter the temp so I start on petrol the van runs at fast tick over for about 3-4minutes then cuts out switch off ignition try again can hear the electric pump and van starts and same thing happens again
If I switch it over to gas after starting on petrol van runs a bit longer but still cuts out
Is this a sign of something electric breaking down or when the engine was removed something fitted wrong Hope some experts have time to read all this thanks

If the same issue on LPG and petrol then look for a common denominator. I cant think of anything producing such symptoms. Low fuel is surely out. Vacuum perhaps?
Pull a spark plug. Take a look and add a photo on here

Have taken out the plugs cleaned them with carb cleaner and checked the gaps all ok
As you say look for common denominator which to me is electrics
The plugs were black and sooty but it will not run long enough for the choke to be fully off

Check all the engine earths and all the 12v wires feeding to the carb. I cant recall all of them. But there is a manifold heater, a carb heater and a cut off valve in case of accident.

Been out looking at my wiring and that common denominator all the 12v live with ignition to the fuel and gas solenoids come off the coil This has been ok for years but if someone has changed the wires to the carb circuits will this be a problem. I am no electrician. Thanks

Anyone know a auto electrician near Havant/ Portsmouth area

Right not spent much time on this but I cleaned the earths no change
So decided to go back to basics New dizzy cap rotor arm plug leads all from Brickyard
New plugs van now keeps running BUT it’s very rich cos the choke is not coming off no heat in the water pipes radiator is cold van was left running for 25minutes
Opened the bleed valve on rad cold water came out
Large dia pipe that is on the thermostat housing seems warm but is very easy to squeeze as if no water present

I would like to take it for a run but am scared of breakdown

Any suggestions. Thanks

sounds like you need to properly bleed the cooling system, procedure should be in the wiki, don't forget to turn the heater to full hot while you do it

Test or change the thermostat. If the coolant system is air free only hot coolant will reach the radiator with a working thermostat.

Have I missed a previous post or comment spotting this, but it looks as if the hose from the header tank is not connected to the top up tank.

Yep, no hose to it, The coolant is also low in the header tank, should be brimmed. Sounds like an airlock somewhere, remember OP there is also the bleed screw on the thermostat housing, but as Stu says the Thermostat could be stuck.
