Won't start - No fuel supply? Any suggestions?

Post by xgav8 »

Hi all,

Took the dash apart to replace my blower motor & heater valve and now she won't start! Not sure if it's in relation to that or if it's a coincidence, though. Would love your help.

She turns over but no life.

It appears to be a problem with petrol getting to the carb as we tested pouring a little petrol directly into the carb and she started briefly.

Spark plugs sparking. Battery is charged. Tried jump starting too.

Could I have disrupted anything to do with petrol supply when working in and around the dash?

Any help greatly appreciated!

She's a 1.9 Petrol 1987.

Petrol 1.9 have mechanical pump so no electrics should affect it
However, make sure you are getting power to the fuel cut off solenoid in the carb , should be a black wire and with ignition on you should hear it clicking the solenoid as you remove and reattach the wire ?

Check the "x" relay as well , trolls what has power when the engine is cranking .

Have you measured the push rod length(100mm) and tested the pump manually like I suggested on your Facebook post :ok

Haven't tried this! Do you have a pic of what that looks like? I'm learning as I'm going...

What/where is the X relay?

Cheers!

Also known as the "X Contact Relief Relay" or “Load reduction Relay “
Basically, the relay that cuts power to all non essential circuits on engine cranking to give more current to the starter.
Normally have the vw number 18 on the top of the plastic case .
This should help you locate it (position 8 )

Easy to do just a couple of nuts to undo the pump. The pushrod is underneath it and just lifts out.

It wont be a coincidence , its likely a duff connection on the dash ribbon and the carb solenoid cut off is not getting power

Interesting! Wonder if the Ribbon got damaged whilst it sat around. How could I test this? And if it's duffed, what would the fix be?

It’ll be behind the fuse box , the main loom , rather than the clock cluster ribbon
As I said check the connections to the relays and the earthing crown .
