new fuel tank

Post by Mona »

Can anyone recommend where the best place to get a new fuel tank? Several places sell them and I wondered which one is going to be easiest to install etc.

Also, is it worth sticking with an early tank, or is there any advantage to swapping to a later tank and filler pipe?

Thanks

Brickwerks, Heritage and Just Kampers I suppose would be the best place to get one from.

Late filler is plastic and a different size if I recall, no ideas of benefits, maybe late tanks are cheaper or more expensive than early ones. Also there will be a fuel injection tank or a carb tank. Fuel injection tank has larger outlet.

Best to upgrade to later plastic filler tube and correct tank to go with it.

Hello,

Early fuel tank

I know these are Serial Kombi but you will get the idea...

Tank....https://www.serial-kombi.com/en-GB/tran ... ro-n310408

locking ring: https://www.serial-kombi.com/Content/im ... 197_01.jpg

Make sure you get the 3 little screws new, preferably S/steel..

Plastic neck seal: https://www.serial-kombi.com/Content/im ... 1_0002.jpg

Rubber tank filler neck:  https://www.serial-kombi.com/Content/im ... 01119D.jpg

I would suggest you get a spare  couple of these : https://www.serial-kombi.com/Content/im ... 0501_1.jpg
because if you push it into the tank.. it won't come out again..(ask me how I know.. )

It is a good idea to renew the heater hose over the tank, as it will be degraded. CT's have great heating!!

If you use silicone grease for assembly, it makes things so much easier.

They are all made by the same company. Upgrade to the later tank and filler pipe. The tanks are so poorly made, the smaller filler neck allows more wriggle room through the chassis rail.

If you intend to keep the van for a while I recommend painting the curved 'valley' area in the top of the tank with a good few coats of brushed on smoothrite or similar, this area is prone to corroding through as it is a muck/moisture  holding area that can get rust pinholes in it. I did the same around the edge seams too, as these start to rust apart after a few years.
