Alternator Pulley Removal

Post by Blrsjer »

Hello all,

The alternator on my T25 1.9 DG has decided to give up on me so I thought I’d treat the old girl to a new one.

Unfortunately the replacement from Just Kampers has a pulley that’s about an inch too far out so it won’t line up with the other two engine belts.

My plan is to swap the pulley from the old unit however I’m having real trouble getting the bolt off.

Anyone have experience removing the bolt, bearing in mind I don’t have any air tools.

I’m aware there are specialised tools for removing them however I’m having trouble working out which one will actually fit the 22mm bolt.

Take them both down to Kwik fit or local garage and drop them a drink to get them swapped , it’s far easier with a uggadugga gun than struggling at home …….

I use an oversized old belt gripped in a vice that holds the pulley without damaging it ( only the 2 ends of the belt where they come off the pulley ), a touch of heat and plusgas on the nut then a spanner with a scaffold pole extension whacked with a lump hammer, usually works for me if the air gun doesn't shift it.

Just out of interest what was wrong with your alternator. Did you check the voltage regulator?

WHS^^^^^^^

Also - just thinking - wasn't there a post recently about the same thing re a JK alternator with the pulley too far out with the problem being the shaft length not the pulley itself?

Must admit that many years ago I had to flip a pulley around on one alternator but that involved welding - something that had to be right otherwise you will set up a lot of vibration. Can't remember what vehicle that was on though.

Thanks for the advice chaps, ended up taking them both to my local garage and they swapped them in about 10 minutes free of charge! The camper is back up and running like a beauty now.
