Stainless Steel Tailpipe Flange Fitting Orientation
Hi -
I'm new to the forum, having just recently bought a 1989 T3 Westfalia 1.6 TD (JX), which I'm chuffed to bits with.
Can anybody help out with a dilema, I've just picked up a Stainless Steel Tailpipe, purchased from "ash1293" on this forum.
It was advertised for a diesel, then when I offered it up to my T3 Westy, removing the existing tailpipe and fitting the replacement Stainless Steel Unit- it was found the Flange Orientation was wrong.
I have contacted "ash1293" imforming him that its not the right part, he has suggested I post this first to see what feedback we get.
Otherwise I will be returning the part and asking for a refund.
Consequently the tailpipe either points up into the Valance or straight down to the ground.
Has anyone had similar issues ???
or is there a remedy to fitting the Tailpipe the right way round ???
Looking forward to your comments

Re: Stainless Steel Tailpipe Flange Fitting Orientation
Was just about to post a link to the advert.
I originally bought in good faith off eBay as part number 068251185 thinking it would also fit my petrol DG.
Didn’t realise it was larger flange & bore so when I realised I offered up for sale here.
Interested if anyone can now clarify.

I have a good used tailpipe off a td and the pointed part of the flange with the mounting hole runs in line with the pipe, the other 2 are at 90 degrees to the pipe. Its for sale if you want it.

Re: Stainless Steel Tailpipe Flange Fitting Orientation
It may be worth saying that with any vehicle 30+ years old, it quite possible that parts may have been fitted differing to the original spec. So concievably, the tailpipe is 'correct' for this T3, but the rest of the exhaust system is not ?

Agree. Have you a photo of the silencer?

Re: Stainless Steel Tailpipe Flange Fitting Orientation
My van came with a newly installed SS system, and a lot accessories including two half moon supports I thinks are for the silencer which I cannot see how they can be fitted and a couple of tubes that look as if they are air conduits and again no way of fitting.

Re: Stainless Steel Tailpipe Flange Fitting Orientation
sounds like the exhaust is of the 'late' design where the back box is supported on brackets that fit the engine mount, and your van is 'early' so has the early engine mount without the bracket mounts.
068 part is diesel, the flanges on petrol and diesel back boxes were orientated differently

That sounds true, have looked at where they should fit and no place for a bracket, this looks like my system but as you say looks as if my engine does not have the area to mount the silencer brackets. Will post this link for guidance for others if of a similar situation or interest.

Back on topic, this would be of great help. Obviously I’ve sold in good faith, but if tailpipe is correct then the OP needs to figure out what’s wrong or the same issue will remain. If it’s not correct then at least we can try an establish that.

Re: Stainless Steel Tailpipe Flange Fitting Orientation
as I posted earlier 068 251 185 is diesel exhaust tailpipe for TD JX code engine up to chassis J053227
what backbox the OP has I don't know but if it is the type with a slip joint at the J pipe end it could easily be rotated so that this tailpipe faces the required way, if it has the 3 bolt flange joint at the J pipe then it could, if it comes apart, be rotated by 120', would this tail pipe then face the right way ?

Re: Stainless Steel Tailpipe Flange Fitting Orientation
Hi - Thanks everyone for your Comments and Help on this topic
When I removed the existing tailpipe, the exhaust box flange was fixed in position and the exhaust box appeared to be fixed / welded to 2x brackets which are the bolted to the chassis.
I couldn't see a way of rotating the exhaust box to realign the flanges to the right orientation for the SS tailpipe
I will take another look at the exhaust Mounting Bracketery and take some pics, hopefully on Wednesday.

Re: Stainless Steel Tailpipe Flange Fitting Orientation
Found this ebay listing , i think with the same orientation of the part you have purchased . The seller says it is for vehicles before 1988 and also gives a chassis number for the change over. Admittedly he /she seems to suggest the jx was available since 1979!

Re: Stainless Steel Tailpipe Flange Fitting Orientation
Brickwerks offer this part which I think has the same orientation as the part multi has . Brickwerks say it fits all jx .
E D I T .l think the part you have purchased only fits the early silencer.
