Rear drum

Just a quick one. Driving today sounds like the passenger drum is catching. I've jacked the van up and span the wheel and all is well, no noise at all. Checked other wheels all spin fine, no noise. When driving though there is noise from the passenger wheel. Bearing replaced recently. Before I start dismantling things could a iffy brake cylinder cause problems?

Pop the drum off and you might see quickly what it is. Maybe some pieces of brake shoe have detached ?

That was my first thoughts, but it doesn't do it all the time, usually quiet for the first few mins then starts.

Obviously when driving there is more load on the wheels, maybe using the brakes after you start driving introduces the problem, something not retracting possibly.

When I had a similar problem it was one of the brake shoe retaining springs having dropped into the bottom of the drum. As said, you'll have to take the drum off to find out.

So as promised..

Looks like the cylinder has a weep? The pads look OK aside from the corners having a bit of wear.

Upon closer inspection

Looks like the front shoe has shifted down, so maybe thats the rubbing I can hear on the bottom side.

That'll come free and get jammed sooner or later. Then the wheel will lock up and you'll have a heck of a time getting the drum off to fix it. No need to elaborate on how I know this - fortunately it wasn't with regard to our van.

At the risk of stating the obvious, looks as if the mounting bolt for the cylinder may have come loose, worth checking the movement of the associated levers and that the movement has not affected the brake line.

Yeah, i checked the springs and cable nothings catching.

I checked all the bolts to make sure nothing was loose everything was secure. The lines fine as well.

A CLA probably wouldn't hurt ?

I always use that grey paste on the pivot points, maybe its VW's 'special sauce' as I've not had much bother with rear brakes so far.

Am I being thick but what do you mean by CLA? 

What paste be that? I did think of putting some copper grease on it sparingly but as there wasn't any to begin with and if I recall the bentley doesn't say anything about that I thought best to leave it alone.

I did some adjustments and it doesn't make any noise now, went out for a test drive. Although using the adjuster through the back of backing plate is a pain in the a*** with a screwdriver.
