Supply for Timing light and E10
Hi Guys
I've decided to run my DJ on 'proper petrol', that's on E5 Super, as long as it's available. I can't be doing with changing hoses, reduced fuel consumption, problems if standing over winter, etc.
My 2.1 DJ was designed to run on 98 octane Super but was detuned (5deg BTDC) years ago to run on 95 octane unleaded (at least I hope it was!)
Anyway I'm going to check the timing - good explanation in Wiki - needs to be 10deg BTDC.
Timing light needs to be connected to the battery.
Will I need to extend the battery leads or is there an easily accessible +ve connection in the engine bay?
Cheers!
Pete

Big bolt and the back of the alternator is the other end of the battery cable !
the timing marks on the pulley are ( if it’s original ) correct for 10°
however I might be inclined to leave it at 5° , not everywhere sells "super" ( now to be known as "normal" as it’s only 97ron I notice , and the synthetic e10 will now be 2star )
I run my DJ at 10° and only on "super" , but I’m noticing it’s not everywhere now …..

Re: Supply for Timing light and E10
Mentioned this on another post, saying my intention was to alternate between Super and E10 depending on what is available when filling up, I notice my local Morrisons only had E10 available but I spoke to my local Shell garage, fortunately using the local number not 0345 so you actually get through to the station itself and they said they had both fuels available at all pump points. My original question was if I do this mixture can I leave the timing alone on one setting.

Re: Supply for Timing light and E10
You can run any fuel on 5° . No need to change anything
if you have a DJ it should be run on “super” and the timing should be 10° but you can run on decaf e10 just be gentle, don’t floor it , don’t thrash it or it will "pink" .
im running at 10° but I’m mixing fuels if I have to . It’ll be fine

What a faff regarding this E10, at least our forum is addressing the issue and giving some good advice, I wonder what other forums are up to. Previous to E10 my only concern on filling up was to find an available pump on the same side as my filler, I know find myself when visiting a new station getting out and seeing what is available before joining the queue.

Well, who'd of thought it? Timing is already set to 10deg BTDC! So myself and the previous owner (at least) have done 26000 miles on Regular fuel. Well I know he didn't drive Cybil hard and I don't, so I hope no damage done!
Such is life.

I have just replaced ALL fuel pipes on my DJ. Every single bit with Cohline 2240 or equivalent supplied by Brickwerks. And relieved l did so. A slow days' work for peace of mind.
I would certainly take a visual inspection of the fuel pipes. They may look sound...as l thought, until....
Reading through The Samba forum in the US, it seems all DJ's run on regular with personal minor timing adjustment for altitude.
My DJ happily runs on 95 octane and has done so for years, often towing a folding caravan weighing 800 kilos. The camper pulls very well, even during the very high summer temperatures last year without any pinking. Ultimate test was the very steep incline coming out of Cheddar Gorge with air temp in high 80's. The auto box coped equally well.
Before the above work l ran the tank as close to empty as l dared. So the needle was in middle of empty block.
After fitting all the new pipes l checked and reset the timing at 5 degrees. Then headed to local fuel station to put 20 quid in and test drive. Low and behold no regular available! So begrudgingly added E5 Super and waited for armageddon. The camper drove just fine. And has covered 90 miles before l refuelled with E10 regular.
Regards
Stuart

Re: Supply for Timing light and E10
If anything just keeping this thread alive, I am tempted to test the E10 fuel by putting some in a jar and place a piece of fuel pipe in it to see how long it takes to damage it, on another note what about fuel containers i.e the green unleaded plastic 5 litre type or even the older red ones. Are these prone to damage over time if used for E10.
