1.6TD engine I.D.

Post by ianvfr750 »

The engine on my 1991 1.6TD has been changed at some point in its life and I'm trying to find out what year of van my replacement engine came from.

The engine number (I think) is JX01602X but it's very difficult to read through the rust and tangle of pipes and wires.

Any help much appreciated.
Ian.

As I remember Simon had a good list of dates and enginr serial nrs on vwt3.com, but I cannot find it now just the VIN page.

IMO 016XXX means it is an early one, however the block itself was not really changed over the years.

The JX code engine was only used in 2WD T25s between 8/84 and 7/91, and in T25 Syncros between 8/85 and 7/92 - see here.

Assuming your van started life as a 1.6TD, it appears that your engine, even if a replacement from a later date, was originally produced for that type of van.

Thanks guys.

I was just hoping I was able to pin it down to maybe a 6 month period of a certain year. I had the same issue with my Rover V8 in my MGB roadster and someone had British Leyland engine production dates which tied factory installation into a vehicle down to June/July 1979 - Good Old British Leyland !!!

In ETKA, for the T2, under 'V-Pages', 'Engine Numbers Overview', the following dates are shown:

31.12.1984 JX000814
31.01.1985 JX002301

So that would put your engine manufacture between those two dates, of course that does not indicate when it was factory refurbished, which could presumably have been many years later. The engine numbers all seem to be six digit though not four..

Hi
I have a very similar problem an looks like my engine is not the original. Its DG135877. Is there anyway to decipher what it means.
It looks like an older number to the original engine.
Any help would be much appreciated.

@Andy, June 1987 originally for your DG, but many have had engine swaps over the years and most of the engine rebuilders don't mark them in any meaningful way so it is reliant on the previous owners to keep details of significant history, but often lost over time.
