Starter motor for 1.9 DG - differences?
Hi all, seems like I have an issue with my starter motor and need to buy a new one.
The issue is, the prices seem to vary quite a bit depending where you buy from.
JK has one for £128 and £141
Heritage has one for £141
brickwerks has one for £166
companies on ebay range from £70 - £100
What would be the difference between them all? I am a complete novice with anything mechanical so go easy!
Heres a pic of the crusty one I've just removed! guessing the crusty / snapped cable wasnt helping anything!

All l can say is you've certainly had your money out of that one!
Brickwerks everytime TBH. You know there is back up if you have any issues. And we need independent companies to keep the big players like JK honest.
I use JK. But Brickwerks for the more serious stuff.

Since you live in London it should be possible to get your original Bosch unit fully refurbished with genuine quality parts for the same money as buying a new made in china unit; I'd ring around a few Bosch service centres and see how the land lies

Did it work to some extent before you removed it, even if not I would give a go at repairing myself depending on condition of internal parts and even these can be replaced, externally a good wire brushing sometimes improves things dramatically and then repaint. Loads of guides available on line on how to repair, if you have the time and facilities of course. After all you got it off and that defeats some.

it worked for a while then it kind of just died, and after going through all the relevant tests to determine what was wrong i have come to the point of it must be the starter thats given up the ghost! (the van had sat for 20 years not used and i got it running about a month ago)
I am going to try and take it apart ( but some of the bolts dont even look like bolts any more lol)
Hopefully it'll be saveable!

You never know, if anything it would be good practice for any future issues.

I replaced the broken wire in a spare starter last year. Double plaids of 16 amp camping cable l think. Or twisted two together beforehand. A bugger to solder. It needs loads of heat. But it worked.

Max, i have to do the same to mine. where did you get that cable from?
also i had to drill out the 2 main housing screws as they were stuck in there good and proper! any ideas where to source these 2 stupidly long screws from? i've been trying to find them but had no luck yet! They appear to be 5mm x 135mm

Re: Starter motor for 1.9 DG - differences?
Made it by sacrificing some 16 amp camping cable... l think. Cut a piece about 400mm long. Removed all sheaths. Twist two or three parts together IIRC. Then cut into two 200mm parts and braided them together with one end held in a vice and braiding as tightly as possible. Cut to size afterwards. Then soldered in place. Getting heat and solder in correct place without affecting other bits is difficult. And it wont look pretty. But it works.
Original has a rubber cover. I just sealed each around the casing to waterproof it using flexible gasket sealant.
Use threaded rod and nuts for replacing two long bolts.

Re: Starter motor for 1.9 DG - differences?
struggling to rebuild this myself so looking to just buy one now.
I got a cheaper one from RTG group and that didnt fit, even though it was meant for a 1.9 dg .(the spindle bit was too big/wide so it didnt slot into where it sits)
the usual suspects are all sold out or on back order, so anyone know of anywhere else to buy one? looking on ebay they seem to all be similar and worried they wont fit either.

Afraid so mate! Search on here for oillite bush removal techniques. Or the internet. Soak new one in oil for 24 hrs.
Good luck.
