Alternator Belt keeps snapping

Post by drippytap »

Any Suggestions please
In Sept 2017 my alt belt went on my 1.6td vw camper
First time probably it was replaced in say 10years
Since then it has snapped fours times
Today, the forth time, I’m sitting on a verge waiting for breakdown having driven just 4miles - since it last went, ten months ago. The van has just sat on my drive in that time - started and run a few times but gone nowhere, before that drove a few miles from home before it went
Any suggestions, I don’t replace the belts but get a local garage
I check that it has play in the centre point and that it doesn’t squeal.

That must be annoying, just guessing but have they fitted the correct belt at the garage, maybe worth checking its compatibility with your vehicle, I would suggest carrying a spare also, is it catching on something which is somehow weakening it either inside or outside its run, does the split happen at the same place on the belt, just a few suggestions. Just as an after thought did the one that broke have any cracks between the teeth indicating ware and tare.  Hope you've got going again.

Check your pulleys are in line. This can cause problems if they are not.
