Thanks for all the excellent info.
It looks very much like the vertical cylinder with the engine number stamped at the bottom is a square flange bolted to the casing..?? I'm hoping the cylinder has just been refitted 90 or 180 degrees out and so the number is facing a different way....

I found the female side of a double spade terminal (lilac and black wires) in the engine bay loom. It looked as lonely as the thing that I thought was a temperature sender so I made up a couple of wires and joined the two together.
The engine now starts instantly and ticks over without stalling. After 20 secs ticking over we can now pull away smoothly and with a minimum of fuss. Happy with that.

Next thing I'm going to look at replacing the Dizzy, Coil and Leads with a set from Powersparks (Simonbbc). I did this with my Landy years ago and was pleased with the results. Has anyone got any experience/thoughts..??
Also Spark Plugs - any that are better than others, or, more importantly, any to avoid..??

Many thanks.

Not possible I’m afraid, post a pic up and we may be able to help further but sounds as if it’s been ground out.

Details on chassis number can be found here https://club8090.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=160651

Ok, I've been scraping more crud off....

Where the Engine number should be it's as smooth as a smooth thing.
What's weird is that there are no 'witness marks' on the Ally - no file marks, no buffing marks, it's not bowed - just smooth and flat.
What there is though is what looks like a capital 'U' and an ampersand '&' stamped into the casing itself. See photo:

Another shot looking down;

What's all that about then..??  :?:

Another spanner in the works - i've just cleaned the Dizzy up;

Through doing a quick search on this forum the dizzy is off an early DF engine..??

If that is the case is there any reason why I can't upgrade it to a later type or are they incompatible..??

Cheers, Dave.

Hey folks - could it be that I have a DG engine but with an older Dizzy as fitted to the DF..??
Are there any other external 'give aways'..??

Cheers, Dave.

Sounds as if you’ve got a right mismatch going on with your van.

As previously mentioned if you haven’t already I’d verify what you’ve bought actually matches the V5.

Could do with some wider shots of engine bay etc but as people have suggested it’s an early setup with pierburg carb suggesting DG, but it could be a DF that someone has chucked a DG manifold & carb on.

Odd that the number has been removed in either case.

Taking the manifold off should let you identify the port shape and if you have dg or dg heads fitted.

Hey Ash,
             Many thanks for the reply.

It does sound like i've got a bit of a mongrel doesn't it..??
The PO advised me to join this forum - so I assume he was a member - and he was a regular at shows.

I still can't help but think there's an explanation (apart from the obvious one..) for the lack of Engine number. I've been around motorbikes my whole life and have seen more than my fair share of poorly stamped numbers. You can always tell.
If somebody has removed the number they have done an excellent job - it's that smooth and flat it must have been 'wet and dried'. Why would someone go to all that trouble and not restamp a number on..??

I've got a question about Ignition systems now so i'm gonna start a new thread...

Cheers for all the replies everyone  :ok

Do you want to tell us the po’s name/ forum user name? We might remember them and you could search their old posts which may flag up some information.

That's a kind offer but I think i've cracked it.....

A mate of mine who has a T25 and a classic Beetle (and a lovely TD5 90) spotted this;

Apparently it means it's 'Factory Reconditioned' - he said he'd seen it on a couple of Beetles over the years...

Does that sound about right..??

Part right I’d say, that is definitely the factory symbol for a recon but if it was factory built they would have stamped a new number after the symbol.

I suspect it’s a factory supplied recon case from when they were still available and someone else has then built up the engine.

I went through all this myself a few years ago.
Had a DG engine with Solex carb, DF dizzy etc.

The thread is in here somewhere. Basically ended up changing it all out for for a Pierburg carb and DG style dizzy, but that meant changing cooling set up too ( Solex has no coolant going through it. )

But in answer to your question - yes, the dizzy for the DG engine made a big difference in drivability.

E D I T: Found the thread.
